well, i am headed toward the end of my semester at Richmont Graduate University and there is a lot to do. i have numerous papers and tests to complete by December 4th and i am getting tired. but i know that i will be able to make it. somehow i always pull through. and unfortunately as soon as i finish the semester this fall, i must begin reading for my 9 classes this spring. call me crazy but i am planning on completing all of my assignments for 3 classes before the classes actually begin. so, i have lofty goals... let's hope that the end actually comes swiftly but gracefully.

well, i feel like i am growing as a person and as an artist. so, it is time to sell the digital equipment and start progressing toward the sound i have found for my art. so, if anyone is interested in buying some gear please contact me by comment and leave your e-mail.

amp- Vox AD60 VTX and the accompanying pedal board. i paid over 1200 for the combo. it has served me well and i love the sound of the VOX but it is time to become a better student of my tone. so, if you want to make me an offer go for it. a guy who i like to call a "friend of mine" whom i have only met once wrote this article for those who are still torn for the vote tomorrow. Click here for the article

basically, he says, if you don't know who to vote for... you can choose not to vote at all. a hasty vote can be a bad vote. (by endorsing a vote over one issue is endorsing the whole party's agenda.) so, please read the article. i urge you to read the article even if you already know who you are voting for.

(and for those of you who choose not to make political statements, by not making a political statement you are inadvertently making a political statement by making no statement at all). so please chew on that one for a while.

well, my boss, friend, and fellow political enthusiast posted this explanation of out tax system in a very easy to handle easy to grasp way... "10 guys walked into a bar" type mantra. so, thanks Sid... you have made my blog.... enjoy the economics...

here it goes:

Our Tax System Explained: Bar Stool Economics

Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:

The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would pay $3.
The seventh would pay $7.
The eighth would pay $12.
The ninth would pay $18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.

So, that's what they decided to do.
The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve. 'Since you are all such good customers,' he said, 'I'm going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20.' Drinks for the ten now cost just $80.
The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes so the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free.
But what about the other six men - the paying customers? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his 'fair share?'
They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody's share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer.
So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man's bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay.

And so:
The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings).
The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33%savings).
The seventh now pay $5 instead of $7 (28%savings).
The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings).
The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings).
The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings).

Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to drink for free. But once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings.
'I only got a dollar out of the $20,'declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man,' but he got $10!'
'Yeah, that's right,' exclaimed the fifth man. 'I only saved a dollar, too.
It's unfair that he got ten times more than I got' 'That's true!!' shouted the seventh man. 'Why should he get $10 back when I got only two? The wealthy get all the breaks!'
'Wait a minute,' yelled the first four men in unison. 'We didn't get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!'
The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.
The next night the tenth man didn't show up for drinks so the nine sat down and had beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn't have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!
And that, ladies and gentlemen, journalists and college professors, is how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.

well, i took a few tests yesterday and i thought i would share a little of what i learned and what i will continue to learn... specifically from Job. in the Christian and Jewish faith, Job is a character of great admiration. for those of you who are not familiar with Job, please check out this link to Job. he was a man of great power and wealth in his community. well thought of but he was not like others. despite his physical and economic wealth, Job was considered by the Most High to be "upright and blameless" Job 1:8 so, through a series of trials, God allowed Satan to completely strip away everything Job had. his family, his money, his land, his house, etc. and even physical pain so much that he did not even stand. he used shards of clay to cut away his physical sores. Job 2:8
through all of this he did not sin. when asked by his wife about the situation, job replied "You speak as one of the foolish women would speak. Shall we receive good from God, and shall we not receive evil?"Job 2:10 so, what do we take from this man of integrity? what do we learn about suffering?

during this hard economic time when we are all stressed like crazy. we are not sure whether our investments will be ready for us for retirement. we do not know about the housing market. people are not confident in either candidate who is running for the presidency. however, when people do hear their candidate say something they like, they "take a sip of the kool-aid" and run with it. however, when one looks into the plans of these candidates, the kool-aid does not look or taste so sweet. (kinda like Joe the Plumber).

in all of this, we know that there will be suffering. just as Job said in Job 7:16 "I loathe my life. I would not live forever. Leave me alone, for my days are a breath." Job recognized how finite his life is. how short. he said it is "a breath".

so, we know that we are living in a failing world. a failing economy. but, we can trust this... there will be suffering. the question is not WHY we suffer. but HOW WE DEAL with our suffering. find a way to cope with your suffering. look at Job as an example. he will teach us how to suffer.

aside: i cannot write this without making a note that i am referring to the biblical figure of Job, not GOB (George Oscar Bluth)

well, today is a day that i wake up with a headache. probably because i am used to drinking coffee well before 9:00 each morning. but i woke up at 11:00 with a splitting headache so i made my way to the coffee pot and now i am feeling much more normal. i have a day off of work and my wife will be proud of me for not taking the double that was offered to me this morning to work shifts for a girl who quit yesterday. i have a hard time saying no to working. maybe it is my desire to be able to have some extra cash to buy some cool music or movies or my uncertainty of people's ability to tip me appropriately. but i am just not the person who likes to sit around.

so, today my tasks are to pick up folders for my classmates and mine that i promised to pick up over a month ago and then study for two tests i have tomorrow. so, i am trying to become more willing to say no to picking up extra shifts. i can't promise that i will be able to say no all the time, but on this wednesday i said no.

what do you have a hard time saying no to?

wheatgrass take 2

well, this morning was a little better. we decided to up the anti to 2 tbsp per adventure so we can condense the consumption down to once a day (saves a little money). this morning i tried the smoothie. my recipe consisted of

1/2 banana
4 strawberries
12 red grapes
3 oz organic pomegranate juice
8 ice cubes
2 tbsp wheatgrass powder

after a lovely blend in our blender, i had a smoothie of dark green! i couldn't quite get all of the ice blended so, it was a little ice-chunky. my initial reaction was "this is not terrible, but certainly not enjoyable". so, i finished getting ready for work and school and hopped in the car and enjoyed my smoothie on the interstate.

back to studying.

wheatgrass

well, i joined the club and i am now going to try and blog about my Wheatgrass consumption. i purchased a bottle of powdered wheatgrass last night at Whole Foods and my wife and i took the plunge this morning and toasted to health and the ultra-dark green substance of Wheatgrass in about 4 ounces of water. after almost gagging, we both got the dark green substance down and i can honestly say that i am excited about our dosage tonight of Wheatgrass. after a long day of studying for a test i have tomorrow, i spent a few minutes on the old google and looked up ideas for smoothies to include wheatgrass. i haven't found too many appealing smoothies that only include veggies, but i am going to try mixing banana, grapes, strawberries, granola, and of course wheatgrass along with some milk and ice. so, if anyone who stumbles upon this blog knows of any good smoothie recipes for wheatgrass, please feel free to pass them along.

school soon

well, i have had about 3 weeks off of school. it was a nice break from reality, but i am gearing up for the next semester. lots of classes and i am trying to not work so much. so, hopefully i will be able to back down from 52 hrs a week to less than 40. i am excited about my classes this semester. the one i am looking forward to most is Clinical Assessment. this class will help me figure out how to "get rolling" on sessions and learn what assessments are out there for my future clients. so... i am stoked to finally get some direction on what my future will hold for me!

i have been thinking a lot lately about what is really driving me in my life. and my thoughts are summed up completely by the words "when it falls apart, all the pieces fit, but you won't see it till you're blinded" -MPJ . this quote is from MPJ's new record Swallow the Sea i feel like i went through one year completely blinded by being busy. though it is important to my family to be able to pay rent and eat and sleep occasionally, i am trying to be more intentional in all that i do. right now my prayer each day before work is "Lord, teach me how to truly serve people" i know that God is at work at my job, and i am just trying to be a part of His work and by serving people i am trying to learn what it means to serve people. though i am trying to learn this daily i am beginning to see the benefit of being intentional about my place at work. also, i am beginning to appreciate more about the sacrifices my wife is making daily for me. she truly hates atlanta. (i am starting to feel the same way) she is no where near her best friends and is working a dead end job. she has one day off a week and the only enjoyment she has here is going to an internship where she doesn't get paid but is doing "special effects make-up" for scary movies.
i am truly honored that she is sacrificing as much as she is for me.
so, what is driving me in life? my wife, learning how to serve people food, and most importantly i want to learn how to listen to people... i want to listen to feel and understand their pain and joys.

well, summer classes are officially over. i am out of class for 3 weeks and i am ready to focus on work and my wife! and more importantly, writing music. i am getting inspired by some of my favorite musicians. the video below is from a Caedmon's Call and one of their 4 front-men, Andy Osenga the song is called Hold the Light. i am intrigued by their musicianship and craft. i hope this video inspires you as well. if you are looking for a blog to read consistently, i recommend reading from Andy. he is fun to read and watch, and i like that he makes me think. and i like to post blogs about him too.

we had some friends visit us from savannah with their amazing baby. and i can admit that we taught Rush (the baby) how to stand and walk on an exercise ball (much like the one Dwight Schrute had on The Office before Jim destroyed it. until i get proof of the ball walking, here is a pic of Rush being Rush.

so, i love listening to my two live Bill Mallonee records. both were recorded in Birmingham, AL and i was at one of them. my favorite parts are the intros into each song. usually they only touch the surface of the song he is about to play yet the witticisms are incredible. in one particular intro he was discussing the reference of a train in Americana music. he said that the train is like our journey in life. and how we usually meet and see trains when they are somewhere in route to their destinations. so they have left point A but are somewhere in hopes of reaching point B. and i was floored by this intro that i have heard about 60 times. (i tend to listen to Bill a good amount).
so, (even though i was supposed to be writing a paper) i stopped to explore my thoughts about the topic of train and journey. i feel like i am getting somewhere with my thought process and i hope to share soon with what i have come up with. and this really makes me want to take a train trip for about a week. i don't want to have a destination. i just want to experience riding in a train with no place to get out at but to ride and experience the trip in all of its sights and sounds. if any of you have any contacts with a train company and can get me some dirt cheep tickets to just ride for a few days... PLEASE let me know.

well, it has been an unbelievably crazy monday. my boss told me the wrong time to be at work... so i was awakened to "where are you... you were supposed to be here... 30 min ago." and while at work i caught my pants on the corner of a sharp edge and i am in desperate need to new pants. now i am taking a short study break to update my very unpopular blog.

2 different... yet the same

well, i went to two weddings this weekend. both on sunday.... and very little sleep. i was so excited about going to visit my friends and seeing my mom. wish i could have spent more time with my family, or seen the rest of them, but weddings were the business for the weekend. so... taking care of business we did. the first wedding was awesome. it was perhaps the shortest wedding i ever went to (11 minutes) but the magnitude of the wedding was eternal and awesome! the reception was at a beautiful place and there were so many people there to support the couple. everyone was dressed to impress. even me. (it is hard to do, but i can impress... when needed). one of my own groomsmen was the best man at this wedding and he has improved on his speech-giving skills over the last year. (dave, your speech at my wedding was still awesome) but this year.... wow! (if only a presidential candidate had this much charisma as you). dave made a comparison to the groom that i loved. but the part i loved was the time and wise words that were spoken. i wish i was as contemplative over my words. then after we ate, toasted, and had cake we went to the reception of the second wedding. it was equally as loving and a celebration... but it was so much different than any wedding i have ever been to. never before have i seen running shorts, a white oxford shirt and a 1970's cartoon tie on a person at the same time. this wedding was just full of color and personality. i have spent a lot of time thinking about these events...

and after thinking about the differences i realized that they were the same. lots of people showing love, cultures clash, but love remains.

one night off

well, this is the first night i have off all week. i am stoked to be going to see Matthew Perryman Jones play with a full band but i wish i had someone to go with. :( right now there are only three musicians who i am really digging. i mean these three cut me to the core and are moving and when i am listening to these people, i can only daydream and say "wow, this is good" they are Matthew Mayfield, andrew osenga, and Matthew Perryman Jones. so, check these guys out. they are all different musicians, styles, but at the same time, they hit you in the face and heart with more "stuff" than anything else could.

i am writing some new music and i found an awesome singer/songwriter to open for me at Starbucks on June 10. Erica Ambrose. so, i hope that all of you can make it on June 10. 10:00pm.! be there or be square

well, i have taken a few weeks away from blogging. why? no big reason, i just decided to work more on the music side of my free time than on blogging. so sorry for not giving many updates. (or any) i've got a gig coming up in Marietta, GA (north atlanta) on June 10 so, please help me out and spread the word. it is at Starbucks so come grab a cup of coffee and listen to some tunes. i am looking for an opener... so, if anyone is interested... please let me know.

i finished my 2nd semester of grad school and i am hoping to enjoy an easy summer semester since i am only taking 2 classes. my wife sold a few paintings at a studio near Lyons, Ga so we are happy about that. check out her stuff at Stef. she's quite an amazing artist and i am glad that her work is starting to be gobbled up for homes and offices.

what a week

wow, what a week. i spent about 3 days or 28 hrs sitting in a class this weekend (fri-sunday) and i feel as if i were a truck driver who drove all the way to california and back about 3 times (even though it takes about 3 days to drive to cali) (the intensity is necessary). i learned a lot about class and i am trying to process all that i learned. one of the take-away moments of class was when one of the professors read some articles from this week's Cosmopolitan magazine. how crazy is it what is written for people to read. and people get paid big money for writing ridiculous stuff. the point of this is...

i spent about 5 hrs reading at Starbucks today. it is an amazing experience every time i go into my favorite coffee habitat. once i step foot in the door, my mind just starts working overtime as i try to soak up the aroma, see familiar faces, and read or study my heart away. i was reading a book for a class i have coming up in a few weeks and i ran across this quote. it made me think so i think that it is appropriate to share this thought provoking word cluster.

so, it has been a while since i said i would start hashing through one of my favorite quotes... so, i will begin... the quote goes "beneath this mask there is more than flesh. beneath this mask there is an idea, and ideas are bullet proof." -V this comes from the amazing movie V for Vendetta. so, i will start with the part that says "beneath this mask there is more than flesh"

wow. where do i begin? i guess, the most appropriate place to begin is with scripture, since i subscribe to the Christian faith. Philippians 3:3 says "For it is we who are the circumcision, we who worship by the Spirit of God, who glory in Christ Jesus, and who put no confidence in the flesh—though I myself have reasons for such confidence. If anyone else thinks he has reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more:" this scripture is just one of many that hits on what V was saying in this quote. that there is more to us than flesh. however, we all have masks that we wear. we all try to hide who we really are. we are so afraid of people's judgments of us that we do not even realize that we are wearing masks. it is only when we realize that we are wearing a mask that we can realize that there is much more to us.

even for those people who do not believe in religion or a higher being there is a need to look for something more. wether by looking to science to explain what is behind the mask. to look into the flesh to see what is going on inside of us and our surroundings. and i like to believe that science completely fulfills religion and beings to light that there is order and a "design" that is shaping who we are.

i guess to illustrate what i am talking about, i will set up a scenario for you. for those of you who saw the movie V for Vendetta, you will be able to picture what i am getting at a lot faster... for those of you who haven't... just try and follow.

V was created through a government science experiment and as a result of a fire at the laboratory where he was being tested at. this fire left V completely scarred from head to toe. he was completely transformed into something/someone new as a result of the fire. so, as a result of the fire, he began seeking to "get even" with the government that made him into the person he is. so, the put on the mask of a man who previously tried to "get even" with the government. by hiding who he is, he became someone else and hid his flesh.

i get excited about writing about this kind of stuff. this is just one part of the 3 i will be writing. so, let me know what you think about my distracted thoughts...

hey friends,

just to update you on things in my life... i have 4 days off this week! wow. i am impressed. i've been working 50+ hrs a week for about 2 weeks in a row and i am really enjoying my days off. i am about to take my beautiful wife to get her first tattoo. and of course she is stoked! i am excited for her and she sketched the tattoo herself so she knows that she will love it! i went to Starbucks this morning to read and the awesome Barista's there hooked me up with my old favorite starbucks drink for free! (it is a venti cup of coffee (only half full) then 3 shots of espresso on top of the coffee!) so, i am quite caffeinated and ready to have fun today playing around atlanta with my wife! as a bartender/server:

i feel it is appropriate to give a few guidelines for tipping...

1) at a restaurant where people do more than ask "would you like fries with that?" it is appropriate to tip.

2) when tipping, 15% is appropriate, but your server will be more likely to remember you and want to wait on you again if you tip 20%.

3) restaurants do not pay servers 7.00 an hour... so, tipping is how the server makes a living

4) if your bill is 28.75... four dollars is not 15%.

5) i am not bitter... when you ask for bread and i cannot get your bread in the next 30 seconds, it is not because i am in the back sampling the wonderful drinks i am making... it’s because i have 15 other people i am taking care of too.

movie thoughts

i just watched one of my favorite movies this morning (i work at night, so i have the mornings for fun). it is called V for Vendetta. this movie idolizes a terrorist who goes against his government because he believes that the oppression posed by the government is killing it's people mentally, emotionally, physically, and in every way possible. the terrorist throughout the movie never truly gives away his identity.

this is what i want to kinda unfold for just a few short sentences before i have to get ready for work... and if i don't get much unfolded, then i will continue it tonight or tomorrow morning. so, here we go:
at the apex (or climax) of the movie he says, "beneath this mask is more than flesh. beneath this mask is an idea... and ideas are bulletproof". WOW. i love this. and i would not have seen this unless one of my peers and fellow thinker Lee Wright did not set this quote aside for me to look at. you see, like many other people, i was caught up in the movie... i was caught up in the visual of this fight that was going on and not at the surrounding picture, the BIG picture. and after Lee showed me the quote, i laughed. literally, i laughed at myself for not seeing that i was blind! i was completely blinded by hollywood, instead of the words.
so, i feel this is going to need more time than i can afford right now to type out in 4 minutes... (this might be a fun hour or so write) so i will come back to it later tonight or tomorrow morning...

it's the little things

i was sitting in class the other day and my professor was telling us about his house. he described it as a house that has a wonderful view of a lake that is in perfect view of the lake with a few trees framing in the lake so that it looks like a work of art. atlanta's been pretty rainy this week and he was describing how he was having coffee out there last weekend and when the sun rose over the lake he was reminded of how God reveals himself so often through nature.
this story got me thinking... what are the little things that God does daily that i am just not seeing or am i seeing them but just not recognizing that God is painting these pictures (like the sun rising over the lake)? one of the first things i realized was the view of downtown Atlanta that i drive home to every night. this is just one example "a little thing" that God is showing me each day.

conversations on church power to harm... or do good

this is a blog i posted on my myspace blog in the middle of december... this blog is more accessible than myspace so, i am posting it here... even though a few of the comments are outdated and some of the raw emotion is not there anymore, the topic is still very prominent and should be discussed! so, come one come all.

i have to keep remining myself that my "heart is desperately wicked" and that i am nothing more than a sinner. sola gracia (latin for saved by grace alone). scripture tells us in 1 Corinthians 4:5 "Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait till the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men's hearts. At that time each will receive his praise from God." so, i repent publicly as far this quite unfrequently read blog will reach that i was wrong for the words i wrote about God's church and the church's leader.

1 Peter 3:9 "Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called" i chopped off the end of the verse because i do not desire blessing in this situation but only growth for myself, my family, and anyone involved in this situation in dealing with loss and gain, that only Christ be glorified in my house and in my life.

i still believe that the american church needs help. and lots of it. with this statement i not only point fingers at the people in charge of curches (leadership teams, pastors, worship leaders, finance committees, building committees, flower, choirs, and lay people) but first and foremost to myself! we are all wicked and dying! we are without hope except for the hope that Christ will work through us, in us and turn our hearts of stone, daily, into hearts of flesh. in hopes that we might love.

with these words i am reminded of one of my favorite singer/songwriters song which says "love, love, love, is what we should be known for". this is absolutely where i point a finger at myself and say "shame on me" because i want to say this about myself, that i am known for love, but in complete honesty, and each person who reads this blog if they are honest with themself (no matter their position of power) will say "me too, man. i am guilty of this too." this song writer also said "the best thing that could happen to me is for my sin to be broadcast on the 6:00 news". this statement is so true for all of us, if we claim Christ, that once our sin is exposed, we cannot hide from it, or behind someone else or a committee or anything else, but embrace and claim our wrongs as our own and repent! only by claiming and having accountability can we conguer what so easily ensnares us.

i am a huge fan of a discussion a friend of mine out up on his blog. in this blog, he points a finger at himself and his fellow believers for our wrongs as a church in america.

The following is an editorial I've written in response to this one, which used the song "There Is A Reason" as a reference. I'm honored by the reference, and by his calling my band "popular". I'm also honored to be slighted alongside John Piper. Here is my response:

Dr. Olson,

I am responding to your editorial in The Baylor Lariat from August 28th of this year. You referenced a song called "There is a Reason" by Caedmon's Call. I'm in that band and I wrote that song.

I thank you, first of all, for taking the time to read this, and to inform you that this is an open letter, and will be published online at my website (andrewosenga.com).

I wish to respond to your article with three (hopefully) quick issues.

1. You refer to me, my band and John Piper (I'm assuming) as Calvinists.

I don't know about Piper, but the band and I consider ourselves Christians, with a Presbyterean/Reformed viewpoint. We do not consider ourselves Calvinists.

I don't subscribe to John Calvin. I tried to read him one time and couldn't do it. I DO believe in the Bible, as I understand it, and as I understand it to have been believed by a great portion of the Church for the past 2000 years.

The way you discuss our beliefs is almost like a sect or cult. That is not the case, and I'm sure you're aware of that. Too many great thinkers, writers and believers adhere to this theology to treat it as such. As a Professor of Theology, I would expect you would respect the tradition and the believers, if not the belief.

What I'm trying to say is this:

I believe God ordains everything AND I believe in free will. And, no, I am not an extremist or an eccentric, and neither are my beliefs. This has long been the majority view of the Church. But more on that in a second.

2. It seems your view of God is very, very small.

I assume that you think of God as being outside of time, space and gravity, and recognize those laws to be His creations. The laws He creates answer to Him, He does not have to answer to them. The same ought to be said of logic. This is where your article bothered me.

You say that it is only logical that if God ordains things, He must be the cause of evil, and since you reject that idea, you reject God's complete power. This IS logical, you are correct. I also believe it is wrong.

G. K. Chesterton is my favorite author. His book "Orthodoxy" pulled me back into the Church when I had given up on it. (It also mercilessly mocks Calvinists, but that's an aside.)

The thing about his book that thrilled me was his discussion of God and extremes. He says that most religions, and a number of Christians, reconcile God's love and his anger by compounding the two and watering them both down. The same with His mercy and His justice. Thus religion, and it follows, God, is boring and dull. He is basically powerless, being basically only good intentions and compromise.

This is the God you describe.

Chesterton argues that God hates compromise. The "lukewarm" being "spit out of His mouth." God IS love, and He HATES sin. Jesus is the Prince of Peace who brought the flood and commanded the annihilation of whole cities. He is purity and sensuality. He is the God of James and of Romans. You get the picture…

You can do one of three things with these apparent contradictions. You can
A) choose one instead of the other, you can
B) attempt to compromise them, or
C) decide to believe in both at the same time, thus defying logic but agreeing with who God claims Himself to be throughout the Bible.

Given the vastness of the character of God described in Scripture, the option C is the only one that makes sense. Yes, it sets aside some sense of "if A then B" but if we believe God created "A", "then" and "B", then it's really His decision to do that.

Which leads to my third point, and it's based on the conversation between God and Job, at the end of his book.

3. God has answered these questions… Sort of…

After the suffering and death of his family, the loss of all his possessions and the complete failing of his health, Job finally hears from God in response to the question "why?". God's answer, as you are no doubt aware, is anything but expected.

He talks about His creation, the marvelous things He's done. He almost taunts Job about it. "Can you do this?" He ends by pretty much saying to Job, "who are you to question Me or My ways?" And Job responds by bowing in worship.

I don't understand it. Frankly, it makes me angry. I don't know why God allows the evil He does. I know He says He's good, and I believe Him. I know He says He is all powerful, and that He makes "all things good for those He loves." I believe Him there, too.

The chorus of the song you referenced contains that Scripture "He makes all things good." Either we believe that's true, because He said it, or we believe it's not. If it's not, not only is God not powerful, but He's a liar, and He's not that good.

It's just like believing that God became a man, woke up after death and somehow freed me from the consequences of my sin. The Church is built on believing in things that don't always make a lot of sense.

I don't understand it, and as much as that bugs me, it's not my place to. Or yours. For me, I choose to believe He is who He says He is. And that's a great comfort.

this blog is one of his many which i subscribe to and read often because it encourages me in my faith. even the stuff i don't agree with, i still try and understand his point of view. i like to TRY and look at things from BOTH sides when there is a disagreement. i fail miserably often.

all of this to say in the words of A.W. Pink. in his book "the attributes of God" in chapter 5 called, The Supremacy of God, writes " The "god" of this twentieth century no more resembles the Supreme Sovereign of Holy Writ than does the dim flickering of a candle the glory of the midday sun. the "god" who is now talked about in the average pulpit, spoken of in the ordinary Sunday School, mentioned in much of the religous literature of the day, and preached in most of the so-called Bible Conferences is the fragment of human imagination, an invention of maudlin sentimentality. the heathen outside of the pale of Christendom forms "gods" out of wood and stone, while the millions of heathen inside Christenfom mnufacture a "god" out of their own carnal mind. in reality they are but atheists, for there is no other possible alternative between an absolutely supreme God and no God at all. a "god" wose will is resisted wose designs are frustrated, whose purpose is checkmated, possesses no title in Deity, and so far from being a fit object of worship, merits nought but contempt."

to those of you who have made it this far in the blog, i personally salute you. it has been a wonderful experience putting these thoughts together, and putting them down in this blog. i want to remind each reader, that with each word, i point to MYSELF first. i am not writing these words for anyone else's benefit, but just to remind myself how much i need the Lord, the Most High God, the God of Holy Writ, and my Savior.

well, the title is self explanatory. the last few days have been ridiculous. (not the Harry Potter "say ridiculous to turn the dementors into something ridiculous" sort of way) but uber crazy! i have been studying not only for school, but for my server and bar tests for the last 4 days! all i've done is get up, study, go to work for 10 hrs a day and study till i pass out, then wake up and do it again.

i had a test today in one of my grad school classes... let's hope it went well! i don't have to study anymore for work until tomorrow. so, i get to "take the night off" and just go to work from 5 till 11. when i was born... they didn't tell me life was going to be like this!

anyone going through similar stressful times and want to share about it?

well,

the fun of blogging is difference of opinions. i do not hold all the answers and i do not claim to even hold some of the answers. but i do know from my experiences how i am effected and how my family is effected in situations.

in response to dave's comment. man i am right there with you with the "alpha male" in churches. you and i have been there leading worship and hanging out and encouraging each other in a church where the sermons were "piped in" from other another campus 2 hrs away. and i admit that there was some awesome teaching from multiple people from those screens, and i was encouraged a great deal from spending time in that congregation.

but i am right there with you and i like the idea of your home church where there is a pastoral staff that is "multi-tiered" (i just made that term up for this situation) where there is no "alpha". it just doesn't provoke "alpha" or "undue power" but the system allows for encouragement, conversations among leadership, and humility. i want to read more about that.

but as i think about those leaders in the church who have stood out to me as my spiritual mentors, (pastors specifically) those have been the one's who have served side-by-side with me in the "trench" and in the worst of times. they have been willing to take time to have tough conversations without pulling the "i'm the pastor" card out of their wallet.

my spiritual hero is a man named Jimbo Bass. he is a servant of the Lord in Savannah, GA. and this guy carries the title of "pastor". however, he is a humble, respectful, and diligent man who demands respect by the humility in which he lives his life. he is compassionate to his family and church family, he truly finds ways to "love his neighbor", he is purposeful in ALL that he does. seriously, just to give you a taste of what this guy lives for i'll give you a quick example (story if you will)

Jimbo has a 5 yr old little girl. she is the most precious girl in the world and i hope to have one just like her one day. and she just loves princesses! (like any 5 yr old girl) so, last fall Disney was putting on one of their ice shows in Savannah and Jimbo suprised Sarah Katherine by taking her on a father-daughter date to see the princesses. and for hours they saw Cinderella, Snow White, Ariel (the Mermaid), and every other disney princess. and Jimbo said that before his very eyes, he saw the Gospel being presented with each story of each princes. of how they were taken out of situations of despair and they were placed in dazzling white dresses and were given places of honor in a kingdom with their King and Prince. seriously, as he told me of this night with his daughter, his eyes lit up with the brilliance of a star!

this is just one example of the ways this pastor has impacted my life. seeing the Gospel in almost everything he sees. so, if that last blog put you off, i am sorry to give you a sour taste of my world-view. but i like to push buttons, have conversations, talk about the Gospel in Disney Princesses, and discuss theology over a pint. this is just the way i work.

so, do you have a story of someone, maybe your spiritual hero, who has just truly shown you what truly being a Christian is all about? do you have a pastor or a friend who has helped you see the Gospel presented in a Disney production or an aunt who baked you cookies each week just because she wanted to spend time with you to find out what was really going on in your life? why are your spiritual mentors truly your mentors? what is your story?

hey,

as most of you know, i love to read anything about the modern church, online, that i can get my hands on. the reason i love to read the online stuff is that it is not filtered by editors, publicists, pastors, administrators, or any of the other political systems we have put in place in our churches to filter what we really think. anyways, back to the modern church thing... as most of you know i wrote a blog about 2 months ago that had a bunch of thoughts about how the american church has been flipped out and is very undirected, or over directed to whatever the pastors point of view is... (basically, we are pushed back to before ole Guttenberg invented the printing press)

so, of course i was reading an online blog from a guy i have linked to many times in the last month. and i link to him again. it is about the modern church and this wonderful idea of video sermons shlog.com
